Amitabh Bachchan says actress Zubeida was married to Maharaja Hanwant Singh on KBC 18, Khalid Mohammed slams makers: ‘How could your research team make such a gaffe?’
On October 30, Amitabh Bachchan claimed Alam Ara actress Zubeida was married to Maharaja Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur and died in a plane crash with him. However, in reality, actress Zubeida was married to Maharaj Narsingir Dhanrajgir Gyan Bahadur of Hyderabad.

On Wednesday, Varun Dhawan and directors of Citadel: Honey Bunny graced the hotseat on Amitabh Bachchan’s popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati. During the show, Amitabh posed a question to Varun and DK, “Which actress tragically passed away in a plane crash along with her husband, Maharaja Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur?” The options were, “Sulochana, Mumtaz, Nadira, and Zubeida.” This question kept Varun and DK in confusion for a while, making them use two of their three lifelines. One of the lifelines involved video calling the writer of Honey Bunny writer, Sita Menon. Finally, they answered Zubeida, which was the correct answer.
Post that, Amitabh Bachchan told the back story. He said, “The King met the fate when he was campaigning for the first ever elections of independent India. Meanwhile, Zubeida was the actress who had worked in the first ever Indian Talkie film, Alam Ara. Later, her life inspired a film titled Zubeida.” To which, Varun added, “Karisma Kapoor, I think worked in it.” Amitabh said, “It also starred Manoj Bajpayee.”
However, in reality, Hanwant Singh’s wife Zubeida is different from the actress Zubeida. This goof up was pointed out by several X users, eventually catching the attention of Zubeida’s son Khalid Mohammed. He slammed the makers of the show on his X account, and wrote, “KBC, Amitabh Bachchan. This is my late mother Zubeida Begum. She wasn’t born when Alam Ara was made. An apology on the program for gaffe would be the least you could do. But know something? I don’t expect it.”
In another post, he wrote, “Kaun Banega Crorepati… Whoever calls the shots may I request for a clarification on KBC. Zubeida (Dhanragir) was renowned actress who featured in Alam Ara. Not my maa Zubeida, did wish to act, wasn’t permitted by her strict father. How cld your research team make such a gaffe?”
Another user shared, “So #KaunBanegaKarodPati goofed up today when it comes to the question on Maharaj Hanwant Singh and his wife Zubeida Beghum who both died in plane crash in 1952.”
He added, “This Zubeida (1), the second wife of Hamwant Singh ji was not the lead actress of the first talkie film #AalamAara (1931) while @SrBachchan in his commentary claimed Zubeida (1 – wife of Hanwant Singh ji) was the lead of AalamAara. Zubeida (2) the lead actress of AalamAara had married Maharaj of Hyderabad and lived upto late 80s. She had recorded an Aalam Aara song for Tata Oil Mills’ show Mortal Men Immortal Melodies in 1982 [to mark 50 yrs of Talkies].”
