Actor Jisshu Sengupta recently appeared on SCREEN’s Dear Me… Season 2. During the conversation, the celebrated Bengali actor revisited his early days and remembered how his family struggled to survive. He even recalled facing challenges when he switched from TV to films. Sharing how Rituporno Ghosh changed his approach towards the craft, Jisshu also recalled the first time he met and worked with Mr Amitabh Bachchan in The Last Lear in 2007.
Sharing how he fumbled with the scene during their first meeting, Jisshu Sengupta said, “I met Mr Amitabh Bachchan while we were filming for Ritu Da’s film The Last Lear in 2007. Before this, Mr Bachchan had seen a tall, lanky guy clicking photographs, not being introduced. After 4-5 days, I sit in front of him…and Mr Bachchan speaks Bengali very fluently because he started his working career as a salesperson in Calcutta. He was there for a couple of years, so he understood and spoke Bengali fluently. Ritu Da introduced us, and we had a three-page-long scene together. He was playing a retarded theater actor, and I was playing a celebrated journalist.”
“I was supposed to show him an attitude in the scene. During the rehearsals, I was sitting at the edge of my seat. I memorized my lines and his lines, and the speed at which I had to deliver the dialogues was three times faster, and I was also saying his dialogue. Ritu Da was scolding me, and Mr Bachchan stopped him. He said, ‘Why are you scolding this boy? Can he deny that I am Amitabh Bachchan?’ That time, I just wanted to go home and leave acting for good. But he was so sweet that he rehearsed with me 30 times. He made me absolutely comfortable,” Jisshu shared.
He further added, “Later, when I asked him why he did so, he said, ‘Jisshu, look what I say, don’t take it to heart, I am Amitabh Bachchan, doing a film with Rituporno Ghosh, we both have our audience, it’s not my genre of films. When people come and watch the film, I do brilliantly and you don’t do well, the scene won’t stand, and if that happens, the film won’t stand, so it’s my responsibility that even if people come to see me, you also perform well.’ I learned that he gives his cues when he is not in frame, too; that’s why he is Amitabh Bachchan.”
On the work front, Jisshu Sengupta was last seen in the web series, The Trial Season 2 as for Amitabh Bachchan, he is currently seen hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 17.
