Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan gave a break to Chandrachur Singh despite a bad audition: ‘You have to be all alone’
Chandrachur Singh auditioned for his debut film with ABCL. He was surprised when he landed the part.

When Chandrachur Singh made his debut in Amitabh Bachchan’s first production Tere Mere Sapne, and appeared in Gulzar’s Maachis, he was the new star on the block. His performance in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Josh, where he played Aishwarya Rai’s love interest, solidified his standing in Bollywood. In a recent interview, Chandrachur recalled his first film and shared how he went through an audition process that was judged by Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan.
In a chat with the YouTube channel The Lighthouse by Samar Sarila, Chandrachur said that auditions aren’t a “yardstick of a person’s worth”, and insisted that in his profession, “actors improve over a number of years.” Recalling his audition from Tere Mere Sapna, Chandrachur said that he was disappointed in himself, and was quite surprised when he landed the part.
“I thought the audition didn’t go off well. As I told you, it’s not a yardstick, but I was judged differently by Mrs Bachchan and Amit ji and my director for the audition, Sachin Pilgaonkar. And what they liked was… something else about me. They liked some of the qualities about me. I don’t think I gave the best audition in the world. In fact, I was very disillusioned after that audition. I said, ‘What did I do?’” he shared.
Chandrachur said that since they were veterans, they saw a spark in him that even he wasn’t aware of. “But they found something because they know how to look, they are the professionals and they are the best to the best. It was my beginning,” he shared and added that he learnt about landing the part a week later. “I thought I haven’t got it,” he said and recalled that he called Jaya Bachchan to find out about his result. “She said, ‘No no, I am so sorry. We didn’t get a chance to tell you we loved it and so you are on. I said, ‘s**t, I was thinking the worst’,” he shared.
He also recalled Amitabh Bachchan’s advice, “Mr Bachchan once said to me that in front of the camera, you are all alone. So at one level, you do feel connected. At another level, when the camera comes on, there is no one there to hold your hand. You’ve got to be there all alone.”
Tere Mere Sapne was made under ABCL, Amitabh Bachchan’s company, that resulted in his bankruptcy a few years later.
Chandrachur was seen in films like Kya Kehna, Dil Kya Kare among others. He was last seen in Akshay Kumar-starrer Cuttputlli.
