Aishwarya Rai has dressed up as a bride in many of her movies but when it came to her own wedding outfit, the actor knew exactly what she wanted. Costume designer Neeta Lulla opened up about the conversation she had with Aishwarya over a decade ago when the actor was deciding her wedding look and recalled that she wanted everything in her outfit to show her cultural roots. Neeta also dismissed the rumours that the outfit cost Rs 75 lakh and said that even though she does not remember the exact cost of the outfit, it wasn’t anywhere close to the rumoured amount.

In a chat with Bollywood Hungama, Neeta said that Aishwarya was dressed as a bride on the set of Jodhaa Akbar when she discussed her wedding outfit. “When we were discussing her wedding outfit, she was dressed in her Jodhaa wedding outfit. I remember her saying ‘I’m not dressing like this for my wedding. I want to dress in a kanjeevaram so you have to figure what has to be done for that. Speak to my mother and you guys do your recce as to where you want to get it woven and what you want to do’,” she recalled.

Neeta said that Aishwarya, who is a south Indian, wanted her culture to reflect in her wedding outfit. “Because she’s a south Indian, she’s a Tulu, she wanted that culture too. Her cultural upbringing, her cultural values and everything to exude in her look and her style statement and that’s exactly what we did,” she recalled.

She said that they got saree woven for her and got the zardozi blouse embroidered to match the saree. “We got the saree especially woven for her and the blouse was also very basic 5-inch sleeve blouse like a lot of south Indians wear,” she shared.

Neeta had previously dressed Aishwarya as a bride in her movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas among others. The actor and designer have been collaborators since the time Aishwarya appeared in Shankar’s Jeans.
