Actor Abhishek Bachchan, who is gearing up for the release of his new film I Want to Talk, spoke briefly about his motivations to challenge himself professionally at this stage in his career, and reflected positively on his experience working with director Shoojit Sircar on the project. Abhishek, the son of legendary Hindi film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, said that he still adores bombastic Indian films, but felt the need to break the ‘rut’ that he was in.

At a music launch event for the film on Wednesday, Abhishek was asked what the biggest takeaway from his experience with Shoojit was, and he joked, “Don’t ever put on weight for a film again. Trust me, at my age, it gets very difficult to lose it after a while.” On a serious note, Abhishek continued, “It reassures you that there’s a little space for everybody out there. And I hope you all can find some sort of parallel in your own life. We’re all stuck in the rut of life, we’re doing what we’re doing. Some of us have got corporate jobs, some of us are artists, and life dictates to you what you should be doing and how you should be doing it.”

He said that working with Shoojit gave him the confidence to ‘do something different’. Asked how I Want to Talk stacks up against the rest of his filmography, Abhishek took the opportunity to speak some more about his larger existence. “In life, everything you do should be memorable. The success and failure of any endeavour in life, be it business, sports, films, is not in your hands. What’s in your hands is that the memory associated with making whatever you’re making is memorable.”

Abhishek has had just two theatrical releases in the last six years – Manmarziyaan and Ghoomer. He has, however, appeared in a string of streaming films such as The Big Bull, Ludo, Bob Biswas and Dasvi. The actor is all set to star alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Suhana Khan in Sujoy Ghosh’s still-unannounced film King. He will also appear in Housefull 5. But first, he will star in Be Happy, another film, like I Want to Talk, that explores father-daughter relationships. Abhishek is father to Aaradhya Bachchan, and his I Want to Talk co-star Ahilya Bamroo said at the event that she wanted to do justice to the relationship for exactly this reason. The film will be released on November 22.
