Actor rebelled against conservative Muslim family to work, fans wrote her letters in blood, left industry for inter-faith marriage
Actor Aamna Sharif gained a lot of popularity after playing the female lead in Ekta Kapoor's TV show Kahiin To Hoga. However, the road till there was not easy.

Actor who rose to fame in the 2000s and was one of the most loved faces of Indian television. She became a household name and ruled the TV industry with her role as Kashish Sujal Garewal in Ekta Kapoor’s hit show Kahiin To Hoga. Aamna Shariff, whose on-screen chemistry with co-star Rajeev Khandelwal holds a lot of importance in the history of Indian TV, belonged to a conservative Muslim family. She eventually gathered the courage to fight through her personal struggles, to fulfill her dream of becoming an actor.
Began career with ads
The actor was born on July 16, 1982, in Mumbai to an Indian father and a Persian-Bahraini mother. In an interview with Hindi Rush recently, Aamna recalled her family struggles and shared, “I always wanted to become an actor, but I came from a very conservative Muslim family. My dad passed away very early on, so it was just me and my mom.”
She further added, “No one ever thought anyone from the family would go in the acting line. I also had to give up earlier, because the circumstances were such that I had to work at a boutique to go ahead with my education.”
Aamna Sharif started her career with modeling, advertisements and music videos before transitioning to television and films. She did videos for artists such as Kumar Sanu, Falguni Pathak, and Daler Mehndi. “But, destiny is destiny. I got an offer for an ad when I was in college. I gathered the courage to take permission from my mother again. My mom said that it’s impossible, I kept convincing for six months, she went against the entire family,” she said.
“They didn’t talk to her for two years. I did music videos after that, and there were many other ad films as well. Ekta Kapoor saw me there and called me to audition. That is how my main journey began. I am very grateful to her. My mom has complete faith in me,” the actor continued.
Bollywood venture didn’t work
After her successful television show Kahiin To Hoga (by Ekta Kapoor) finished in 2007, Aamna tried her hand in the Bollywood industry, appearing in films like Aloo Chaat, Aao Wish Karein, and Shakal Pe Mat Ja. However, none of her films worked at the box office and were major commercial failures. After a series of flop films, she made a comeback to the small screen with the show Hongey Judaa Na Hum, featuring opposite Raqesh Bapat. But, the TV series recorded very low TRPs and was taken off the air within six months.
Took a hiatus to get married
In 2013, Aamna Sharif moved away from limelight and tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend, Amit Kapoor, a film producer. The couple welcomed their first child, son Arain, in 2015. The duo keeps sharing pictures on social media, while celebrating both Karwa Chauth and Eid, reflecting how they embrace both Hinduism and Islam.
Aamna Sharif’s comeback
After going on a hiatus for six years after her wedding, Aamna Sharif made a return in 2019 with Ekta Kapoor’s Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2, which was a reboot version of the iconic 2001 TV show. She played the role of the popular antagonist Komolika Chaubey, originally played by Urvashi Dholakia, replacing Hina Khan in the portrayal. Recently, the actor starred in two web series in 2022 – Damaged Season 3 on Hungama Play and Aadha Ishq on Voot Select.
