The wedding of Aadar Jain — legendary actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor’s grandson and cousin to Bollywood stars Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan — was a highly publicised event last month, especially with the entire Kapoor khandaan in attendance. However, beyond the grand celebrations, it was one of his remarks about past relationships that made bigger headlines, sparking controversy as many felt it was in bad taste.

During his mehendi ceremony speech for fiancée Alekha Advani, Aadar referred to his previous relationships as mere “timepass”, a comment that did not sit well with many netizens. Several people criticised claiming that it was disrespectful to his former partners, including actor Tara Sutaria. “I have always loved her and I have always wanted to be with her. So she sent me on this long journey of 20 years through time-pass. It was worth the wait because I got to marry this beautiful, beautiful woman, who looks like a dream. I love you, and it was worth the wait. It’s a secret, I have always loved her,” he was heard saying during the ceremony. While social media was quick to call him out, Tara Sutaria’s mother Tina also appeared to take an indirect dig at Aadar through a social media post.

In response to the backlash, Aadar has now clarified his statement, emphasising that he had said “20 years” and not “four years”, contrary to widespread belief. He also argued that both his words and his silence were misinterpreted. Stating that he was raised to respect everyone, regardless of their background, Aadar told the Times of India that people had taken a short clip from his speech out of context and formed opinions as they pleased.

“It’s unfair for her (pointing towards Alekha) and her family, me and my family, her (directing at Tara) and her family. Obviously, there’s no truth to any of it,” he noted. Aadar mentioned that his now-wife Alekha is one of his oldest friends and that she, too, understood the reality of the situation. Pointing out that everyone has a past, he said, regardless, just because a relationship doesn’t work out, it doesn’t mean one should badmouth the other.

Echoing his sentiments, Alekha stated that she has been part of Aadar’s life in different capacities since childhood and knows the whole truth — not just selective parts of it. “Even she (Tara) knows that we (Aadar and I)’ve been friends for so long. This whole story is baseless,” she added.

Aadar and Alekha tied the knot on February 21 in the presence of the entire Kapoor family, including Kareena Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Neetu Kapoor, among others. Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Rekha also took part in the celebrations.
