Sanjay Malhotra’s Academic Journey -From IIT Kanpur to Princeton: The government announced on December 9 that Sanjay Malhotra is the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor. After graduating in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1989, Malhotra earned a Master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University, USA.
In 1990, he cracked the UPSC CSE and became an Indian Administrative Service Officer of the Rajasthan cadre. During his 33-year career, he has worked in various segments, including power, finance and taxation, information technology, mines, etc. He is appointed to the office for three years starting from December 11.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is one of the Institutes of National Importance awarded by the Government of India. The Institute ranked four under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 in the engineering category. Moreover, in the overall category of the ranking, it ranked 5, 7 in the research category, and 30th in the management category.
Not only national recognition, the QS World University Ranking 2024 has also placed the institute at 263rd position among the top colleges in the world.
Founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, later named Princeton University was the fourth college established in British North America. Under the top QS Universities rankings, it ranked 22, however, in the Times Higher Education, it is ranked 4.
