Punjab University announces students’ election date, September 7 is D-day

PU authorities will be held responsible for any violence during the elections. The varsity has been asked to provide a list of executive body of students’ union and the list of executive members of each party to the police.

IT’S OFFICIAL. The elections to the Punjab University Campus Students’ Council will be held on September 7 on the varsity campus.

The elections, for the first time, were announced by Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover. September 2 is the last date for filling of nomination papers.

With the announcement of election date, code of conduct has come into force. The authorities will now hold an all- party meeting with student bodies.

The final list of approved candidates will be put out on September 3 by 3 pm. Polling will begin at 9.30 am onwards. The counting of votes and result of panel candidates will commence at 2 pm and will be declared by around 6-7 pm. The counting of votes will be centralised and will be held in the Gymnasium Hall.

The student bodies will not be able to canvass in the girl hostels in groups. Only panels of different student organisations with identity cards will be allowed to enter girls hostels for canvassing. Executive elections will be held on September 14 in the auditorium of physics department.

The V-C said, “Student elections in the university should be a good experience for everyone. Students gain valuable experience after taking part in the election process.” Recalling his student days, the V-C said that he was once elected as a class representative.

FOR the first time in students’ elections, Panjab University has introduced an option of None of the Above (NOTA). All the ballot papers will have a column of NOTA. The move has been welcomed by the students on the campus. Strict instructions

THE Chandigarh Administration has issued strict instructions to Panjab University for peaceful conduct of elections on the campus and affiliated colleges. The chief security officer has been directed to keep a close liaison with the Chandigarh Police.

PU authorities will be held responsible for any violence during the elections. The varsity has been asked to provide a list of executive body of students’ union and the list of executive members of each party to the police.

The administration has pointed out that CCTV cameras installed at the gates are not functional and directed the varsity authorities to get them repaired. A total of 400 cops and as many as 300 PU security staff have been pressed into service for ensuring that no untoward incident takes place.

“Security checking after today will become even more stringent and we will not tolerate any kind of violence on the campus. All the activities from now on till voting will be held under video surveillance,” said chief security officer Jatinder Grover.
