An anti-ragging committee under the National Medical Commission has setup a 15-member National Task Force to study cases of depression and suicides among medical students.
The task force will be chaired by Dr B M Suresh, professor of psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS).
The task force has been asked to study the existing literature and suggest evidence-based strategies for improving mental health among medical students. A final report has to be submitted by the task force by May 31, according to the official order.
“Mental health of medical students has been a cause for concern in the recent past leading to depression and suicide by medical students. To address this issue, a National Task Force has been constituted by anti-ragging committee of the NMC,” the order said.
Other than studying the literature and analysing the factors contributing to the challenges, the “committee may visit the colleges where incidents of suicides have been reported”. the order said. The task force has been asked to submit the monthly progress report to the anti-ragging cell.
