For the eighth consecutive year, the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, secured the top spot in the ‘Best-Performing Law Colleges’ category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The Ministry of Education today announced the list of top institutes today.

Like last year, NLSIU Bangalore is followed by National Law University (Delhi) and NALSAR University of Law (Hyderabad) at the second and third positions. The fourth spot has been secured by Kolkata’s West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences,  while Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar, stands at fifth place in the rankings.

Top Law Colleges NIRF 2025

IIT-Kharagpur, that ranked seventh last year, has climbed to the fourth position.
This year’s rankings were announced across 17 categories — Overall, Universities, Colleges, Research Institutions, Innovation, Open Universities, State Public Universities, Skill Universities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

NIRF 2023 Top Law Colleges

In 2023, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) improved its performance, earning 80.52 points compared to 78.00 in 2022. The National Law University, New Delhi, maintained its second-place standing for the second consecutive year, scoring 73.91 points. NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, climbed to third place with 73.76 points, moving up from fourth in 2022. Meanwhile, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, rose to the fourth position with 69.34 points, advancing from fifth place the previous year.

The NIRF parameters and the weighted averages adopted to derive the rankings differ for all the categories. The broad categories adopted to rank the colleges, universities and institutes include teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity and peer perception.

The participation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the NIRF rankings has grown from 3,565 in 2016 to 14,163 in 2025, as per the Ministry of Education. The number of categories and subject domains have expanded from four in 2016 to 17 in 2025.
