JNU hires professors from ST category for first time in largest recruitment spree

In the last 19 months, 23 female candidates have already been recruited and the number could go up as the appointments are still going on, said JNU VC.

In a first, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has appointed professors from Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, as a part of the institute’s largest recruitment spree since the founding of the institute. Additionally, in the last 19 months, 23 female candidates have already been recruited and the number could go up as the appointments are still going on.

“Women in JNU are being appointed in leading administrative positions also like the university recently got its first woman Central Vigilance Officer. Out of a total of 48 chairpersons across schools, at least 14 centres have women chairpersons. Faculty promotions have been a top priority which is ongoing and women clearly are beneficiaries here also as they have recently acquired top positions like JNU’s Director (Research & Development) and President (Internal Complaints Committee),” JNU VC, Santishree Pandit told indianexpress.com.

These appointments are being made in mission mode with the aim of bringing “diversity and implementation of constitutional guarantees.”

As per the official data, a total of 186 candidates were interviewed for the recruitment process. “Till now 331 faculty positions have been advertised and about 186 Selection Committees have been conducted, including 128 reserved positions,” JNU posted on its official ‘X’ account.

A total of 48 professors were interviewed, out of which 21 were from the UR category, 7 from SC, 4 from ST, 15 from OBC and 1 from PWD category.

A total of 97 candidates were interviewed for the post of Associate Professors, of which 30 are from UR, 22 from SC, 12 from ST, 30 from OBC, 1 from EWS category and 2 from PWD. Similarly, 6 candidates from the UR category, 7 from SC, 8 from ST, 16 from OBC, 1 from EWS and 3 from the PWD category were interviewed for the post of Assistant Professor.

“From the last year, JNU has been continuously filling up the vacant posts, recruiting teachers in record numbers in the shortest period of time. Most importantly keeping up its inclusivist tradition, JNU is committed to filling up academic positions, especially in the reserved categories which were lying vacant for years,” Prof Pandit said.

The institute mentioned that the highest number of 108 promotions through CAS in JNU history has been done in the last 19 months and is still going on in mission mode.

Recruitment of 388 non-teaching positions are going to be filled through NTA exams. This is also highest as well, the institute claimed.
