GATE 2026 Registration: IIT-Guwahati to conduct exam; dates announced, new paper introduced

GATE 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) will conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026. IIT Guwahati has also launched the GATE 2026 website. The official GATE 2026 website is gate2026.iitg.ac.in. In 2026, GATE will be held on February 7, 8, 14 and 15.

The application process for the GATE 2026 exam will begin on August 25. The last date to apply for the exam is September 25 (without late fees) and October 6 (with late fees).

GATE 2026 will be held for a total of 30 test papers. A new sectional paper on Energy Science (XE-I) is being introduced in the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper. Candidates can appear for one or up to two test papers only. The two test paper combinations will have to be chosen from the list of combinations. Only one application form will have to be filled even if candidates appear for two test papers. GATE 2026 test papers will be in English and entirely of objective type.

The types of questions in GATE 2026 will include multiple choice questions (MCQ), multiple select questions (MSQ), and numerical answer type (NAT) questions. In MCQs, only one out of four options is correct. In MSQs, one or more than one out of four options is/are correct; and for NAT questions, the answer must be keyed in using a virtual keypad.

GATE 2026 is being conducted by IISc and all IITs, on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. Valid GATE score can be used for seeking admission to master’s programmes and direct doctoral programmes in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, or humanities; and doctoral programmes in relevant branches of engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities, in the institutions supported by the MoE and other Government agencies. The GATE score obtained by the candidates will remain valid for a period of three years from the date of announcement of results.

GATE 2025 was held between February 1 and 16 and the result was declared on March 19. IIT Roorkee administered GATE last year.
