Former PM Dr Manmohan Singh Impressive Educational Qualification and Career Details: A thinker, scholar, and economist, Dr Manmohan Singh took his last breath at the age of 92 after he was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi late at night.

Born on September 26, 1932, Dr Manmohan Singh was the 14th prime minister of the country. He completed his matriculation and intermediate education at the Panjab University. In 1952, he pursued a bachelor’s in Economics (Honours) from Panjab University.

Dr Manmohan Singh: Academic Journey

In 1954, he achieved a first-class master’s in Economics and the first position at Panjab University. Expanding his academic horizons internationally, Dr Manmohan Singh then pursued an economic tripos at the University of Cambridge, completing it in 1957 with first-class honours.

Dr Manmohan Singh’s academic journey is a testament to a lifelong pursuit of excellence in economics and scholarship. He also completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Nuffield College, University of Oxford in 1962. His doctoral dissertation focused on ‘India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth’ and was published by Clarendon Press, Oxford, in 1964.

His academic brilliance was acknowledged early in his career with the Adam Smith Prize from the University of Cambridge (1956) and the Wright’s Prize for his distinguished performance at St John’s College, Cambridge (1955).

Panjab University

In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, Panjab University has ranked 60 under the overall category, and 35 under the research category. Under the universities category, it ranked 38, with 7th position under the pharmacy category and 27th under the dental category.

University of Oxford

Under the World University Rankings 2025, Oxford University ranked first and is the world’s second oldest surviving university, while under the QS World University Rankings, it ranked three.
