The Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) Controller of Examination Sanyam Bhardwaj is answering frequently asked questions related to Class 10 and 12 board examinations for The Indian Express readers.
The CBSE is a pace-setting national board. It is offering about 204 courses both in class 10 and Class 12 together. CBSE is adopting the curriculum and syllabus developed by the NCERT, and NCERT is also revising the syllabus from time to time as per future needs.
As far as CBSE is concerned, nearly 42 lakh students are appearing in the board’s examinations. CBSE, being a child-centric board, is offering support services to guide them on various social and emotional issues through the helpline wherein their issues are addressed by professionals. This activity of CBSE is quite popular amongst the students and schools appearing in the Board’s examinations.
All boards are same. The CBSE and CISCE is providing education through face-to-face mode only. In case of NIOS, Open and Distance Education mode is used for imparting education. In any manner, I am of the view that any board is suitable for appearing in the Class X/XII examinations. Further, the entrance examinations are not depending on the boards. There is a need that if you are appearing in any entrance examination, you have to understand the requirements of the entrance examinations and make the preparation accordingly.
It is always advisable to go through the curriculum and syllabus of the subject offered for board’s examinations. As NCERT books are written on the syllabus developed by them, hence these books cover all the topics. These books are scientifically written and hence considered suitable for school education across the nation. In case of Board’s examinations, as under the recommendation of NEP-2020, competency base questions are asked in the Board’s examinations and hence questions can come from anywhere. For solving questions, knowledge need to be gained through the books.
Candidates appearing for class 10 examination have to secure overall 33% (IA/Project/Practical and Theory) in the subjects to be eligible to pass that subject.
Candidates appearing for class 12 examination have to secure 33% marks in theory & IA/Project/Practical separately & combined too.
There are central and state boards in India. The scheme of studies and syllabus is quite common across the nation for the subjects which are required for the NEET and JEE. As all the students are studying in the school full year, relevant syllabus is taught by the competent teachers, hence it cannot be said that students of a particular board attain advantageous position than that of other board in the country.
Why to aspire for 90% or above marks in the Board’s examinations. It is said again and again that class 12 examination is not a last station in the journey of life. Life is beyond Board’s examination and does not merely depend on these exams. One should see how a student can become a good human being. This quality will lead to success. However, there is a need that one should prepare well for all the examinations which are there to face in life including Board’s examinations. If required efforts are made, the goal will be certainly achieved.
