A delegation of the INDIA bloc met with the Election Commission on Friday to discuss, among other things, the “delay” in releasing voter turnout figures.

After senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed a rally in Kannauj on Friday in support of Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, who is contesting from the constituency, it’s now the turn of Akhilesh to campaign for Rahul in Rae Bareli.

This is the first time Rahul is contesting from Rae Bareli, a seat earlier represented by his mother Sonia Gandhi. Sources in the SP said Akhilesh is likely to address a joint rally with Rahul in Rae Bareli on May 17. The constituency will go to polls on May 20.

It is learned that the Commission, which earlier in the day had issued a rebuttal to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for “doubting the sanctity of the electoral process”, took a strong line in the meeting with the delegation too.

The Commission members, especially Chief Election Commission Rajiv Kumar, is learned to have cited the examples of how the poll panel has acted on complaints, especially those of model code violations, of all stakeholders cutting across political affiliations.
