Life term to 9 BJP-RSS men for murder of CPM worker

A court in Kerala’s Kannur on Tuesday awarded life term to nine RSS-BJP workers for the murder of a CPI(M) worker in 2005.

On Friday, the additional sessions court in Kannur’s Thalassery had found them guilty for the murder of CPI(M) branch committee member Rijith Sankaran, 25, who hailed from Choonda near Kannapuram in Kannur.  Sankaran was hacked to death by a group of 10 RSS-BJP members when he was returning home along with three other party workers on the night of October 3, 2005. He succumbed to his wounds in the hospital. The other three also sustained injuries.

One of the accused died in a road accident before the trial.

Though the police had submitted the chargesheet in March 2006, the trial began only in October 2018.

The prosecution had found that Sankaran had questioned the activities of the RSS, which had then started a new shakha near Kannapuram.
