Kerala Governor Arif Mohamed Khan, who is the chancellor of universities in the state, on Thursday asked V-Cs of Calicut University and Sanskrit University to vacate their offices within 10 days as their appointments were found in violation of the UGC norms.
Earlier, Governor had issued notices to the V-Cs of Sanskrit University, Calicut University, Kerala Digital Sciences University, and Sree Narayana Open University to explain their rights to continue in office in the wake of Supreme Court verdict in 2022 that had held the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University as “illegal” and “void ab initio” as it flouted the UGC norms. The incumbent V-Cs of these universities had approached the high court, which on January 22 this year, directed the Governor to consider the objections submitted by the incumbent V-Cs within six weeks.
The action from the Governor against Dr M K Jayaraj of Calicut University and Dr M V Narayanan of Sanskrit University came as six weeks fixed by the court elapsed. Khan had also heard the V-Cs before taking the decision. The Governor is yet to take a call on the fate of V-C of Digital University Dr Saji Gopinath, and Sree Narayanaguru Open University V-C Dr P M Mubarak Pash for a report from the UGC is pending.
