A newly built bridge on the Mindola River in Gujarat’s Tapi district, which was yet to be inaugurated, collapsed Wednesday morning.

Sources said the incident took place at around 6.30 am, when the middle portion of the newly-built bridge connecting Maypur village in Valod taluka to Dehgama village in Vyara taluka, collapsed into the Mindola River.

Talking to The Indian Express Tapi District Collector Vipin Garg said, “The bridge was presently non-operational and some portion of the bridge collapsed. We have ordered a probe into the incident and even the quality of the material used will be thoroughly checked.”

Local sources said there was a bridge in the same location but it used to get submerged into the river during the monsoon season as a result people face difficulties. After people sent representations to the political leaders and the state government, the work order for the construction of the new bridge at the same spot began in 2021.

The construction of the bridge had been completed and it was ready to be inaugurated, said officials.
