Rajkot underbridge shut for 2 months for repair

Six years after a railway underbridge was thrown open to public in Railnagar, the Rajkot police has closed it to vehicular traffic for two months. The closure follows a request by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) to find a solution to water streaming out of its carriageway and retaining walls.

“After the bridge was constructed, there had been complaints of water accumulating in it as there is a ‘break-up’ in a drainage line. Due to this, water used to accumulate even after monsoon. To address this issue and fix the leaking drainage, we have started the repairwork of the bridge from Wednesday and therefore, the bride will remain closed for the next two months,” Jaymin Thakar, chairman of RMC standing committee, told the media on Friday, adding the repairs will be done at the cost Rs 50 lakh.

As barricades were placed on both ends of the bridge on Friday, many people unaware of the RMC decision were seen taking an alternate route. Thakar said that Railnagar remains accessible from Junction Plot, Bhagwatipara, Madhapar Chowkadi, and from the Maruti showroom on Morbi Bypass road.
