The 10 were booked after they pitched tents at Khambha village in Sutrapada, laid traps to hunt lions and other wild animals for their consumption and for selling body parts as traditional medicines.

According to prosecution, when a sub-adult lioness — around one year of age – got trapped in the snare, she started roaring, alerting her mother lioness. In response, the lioness came near the place where traps were laid. However, the accused started pelting stones on the sub-adult and the lioness. The lioness attacked Habib in the abdomen.

The matter had come to light when Habib was rushed to a hospital in the nearby Talala town for treatment. Eventually, the forest department rescued the lion cub as well as a jackal trapped in another snare at the same spot.

The court relied on circumstantial evidence like one of the witnesses having seen Habib injured and calling an ambulance. In Talala hospital, Habib told the doctor that he had been injured by a lion.
