Youth chops off cop’s thumb

The Bund Garden police have arrested a 23-year-old man for chopping off the left thumb of police naik Suhas Pandurang Barge during a brawl on Tadiwala Road on Sunday afternoon.

The Bund Garden police have arrested a 23-year-old man for chopping off the left thumb of police naik Suhas Pandurang Barge during a brawl on Tadiwala Road on Sunday afternoon. The accused,Vilas Anil Gaikwad,is a resident of Tadiwala Road.

According to the police,Lata Nana Gade,a resident of Tadiwala Road,had complained that a youngster,brandishing a sickle,was threatening the local residents and causing nuisance. Around 2.30 pm,Barge went to Tadiwala Road to check the situation. He saw Gaikwad moving in the area with a weapon. When Barge tried to nab him,he allegedly assaulted him with the sickle and chopped his thumb during the altercation.

Gaikwad was later arrested and produced before the court which remanded him to police custody till November 20.

Barge is undergoing treatment at Jehangir hospital.
