Sutirth Dey,assistant professor,Population Biology Laboratory,Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER),Pune, has been selected for the Young Scientist Award by the Indian National Science Academy(INSA).
With a research interest in questions that are related to the evolution and ecology of populations of non human organisms,Dey has theoretically demonstrated that the precise spatial arrangement of the subpopulations does not interact with migration in determining metapopulation dynamics.
A recipient of the university of Delhi’s gold medal,Dey has also demonstrated experimentally that for a large number of species, maximum metapopulation stability is likely to be attained at intermediate migration rates.
Currently,I am investigating the effects of asymmetric migration on the stability of metapopulations,”says Dey when contacted.
This line of work has possible implications in the design of migration corridors for conserving populations in fragmented habitats.
His work has been acknowledged by INSA which instituted the scheme of Science Academy Medals for Young Scientists with the aim of distinguishing young scientists of extraordinary promise and creativity who have made notable research contributions in Science and Technology.
Dey who has coordinated the IISER-outreach program under which IISER faculties visit various schools, colleges and universities in Maharashtra and neighbouring states and give popular / technical lectures on science said his interest also lies in the effects of perturbation on the stability of single- and metapopulations.
