Young motorcyclist killed in accident in Pune; mob sets truck on fire

Police have identified the deceased as Ganesh Shankar Shedge, a resident of Bhugaon in Pune.

A 22-year-old man was killed after his motorcycle was hit by a truck on Bhugaon Road in Pune, and an angry group of relatives of the victim and locals set the goods-laden truck on fire after its driver fled the scene.

Police have identified the deceased as Ganesh Shankar Shedge, a resident of Bhugaon, and the driver of the truck as Vishal Chhagan Pawale, 32, who hails from Pirangut. The incident took place around 11.15 pm on Friday on the road connecting Chandani Chowk to Bhugaon.

“The investigation suggests that the driver of the truck tried to overtake the bike at high speed and hit the bike. Shedge was knocked down and sustained fatal injury to the head as he fell on the ground. The driver fled the accident spot leaving behind the truck,” said an officer from the Hinjewadi police station.

An FIR was registered on Saturday and the truck driver was subsequently arrested on charges of rash driving and causing death due to negligence.

A mob of at least 20 people including the victim’s family members, relatives and residents of Bhugaon set the truck on fire over an hour after the incident. The cabin of the truck was gutted in the fire. The police later booked 20 people on the charges of arson and rioting.
