An inmate of the Yerawada Central Prison in Pune attacked and grievously injured an undertrial inmate with a sharp piece of tin on Monday morning. This is the second such incident since May this year, in which a sharp metal piece was used by an inmate to attack another.

According to information given by the Yerawada police station, the incident took place in the open verandah of barrack number 8 of circle number 1 of the Yerawada Central Prison around 11 am on Monday.

Undertrial inmate Rushabh Shewale, who was recently admitted to the prison in judicial custody, was attacked by Rohan Avidas Mane, another inmate, who is from Baramati. Shewale sustained lacerations on the cheek and another above the eye. Mane was then overpowered and caught by prison guards on duty.

An officer from Yerawada police station said that Mane was booked under Indian Penal Code section 324 pertaining to causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

On May 2, a 32-year-old undertrial at the Yerawada Central Prison had suffered a severe injury on the head after he was attacked with a sharp piece of tin sheet during a fight among the inmates over an old dispute.
