THE Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET),Pune,in association with Materials Research Society (MRSI)-Pune,Mumbai,Kolkata and Gujarat Chapters began a four-day workshop and symposium on Wednesday on the synthesis and characterisation of glass/glass-ceramics.

Anil Datar, director,Armament Research Development Establishment,Pune, gave an overview of the materials requirement based on glass and glass-ceramics for defence applications. Veteran freedom fighter,Raosaheb Shinde, emphasised on interlinking /networking of research, industrialisation and education in the light of Gandhian philosophy. Prof Animesh Jha,University of Leeds,UK,delivered the keynote address on optical glass fibres for devices.

During the workshop, the speakers will cover a range of topics, right from basics to the preparation/synthesis of glass,glass-ceramics,glass-composites,glass-nanocomposites and associated safety issues.

Prof AR Kulkarni,IIT,Mumbai, while speaking about some fundamental concepts of glasses and glass ceramics, said,“Various applications of glasses stem from their physical and chemical properties such as transparency, chemical inertness, thermal stability, corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, long term durability,bio-compatibility/ activity.”

V Sudarsan,Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC),discussed the characterisation of glasses and glass-ceramics. Dr CL Nagendra,Indian Space Research Organisation, spoke about glass and ceramics materials for optical applications in space.

GP Kothiyal,BARC,said,“National level events on this theme were held earlier at BARC in 2006 and 2008. However, this is the first international attempt in which eminent scientists from USA,UK,Spain,Portugal and France are participating along with Indian scientists, faculties, researchers and students from different institutes and R & D organisations.”

The workshop is aimed at providing scientific information and data essential for synthesis as well as characterisation of glass along with ceramics and glass-ceramics. The workshop has received overwhelming response with about 60 participants. This two-day workshop will cover 1 plenary lecture,11 invited lectures by eminent scientists from India and abroad. The workshop will be followed up by a two-day symposium on July 9 and 10 at YASHDA,which will be attended by more than 150 national and international delegates.
