The city police on Tuesday arrested a woman for allegedly kidnapping a two-and-a-half-year-old boy from Shivajinagar bus stand on Monday morning. Police have identified the suspect as0 Savita Subhash Nagarkar (50) of Talegaon Dabhade.
Police said victim Abeer Sandip Joshi hails from Aurangabad and his father runs a courier company. He had come to Pune with his mother Smita Joshi and they stayed at Smitas brothers house.
On Monday morning,Smitas brother dropped her and Abeer at the Shivajinagar bus stand as they wanted to return to Aurangabad. Smita was looking for an Aurangabad-bound bus around 10 am when she realised that Abeer was missing. She looked for Abeer all around but when she could not find him,she informed her family members and the Shivajinagar police.
Family members and police teams launched a massive search operation in and around the Shivajinagar bus stand,police said. Police checked over 100 buses and the nearby slums.
Meanwhile,around 1.30 pm on Tuesday,Smitas brother-in-law Sushil Joshi saw a woman whose face was covered with a scarf and was carrying a baby near the bus stand,police said. As Sushil found the womans movements suspicious,he approached her and found that she was actually carrying Abeer. Sushil then raised an alarm,nabbed the woman and handed her over to the Shivajinagar police.
Police inspector Seema Mehandale said they arrested Nagarkar on charges of kidnapping. The inspector said investigation is on to find out the purpose behind the kidnapping.
Police said Nagarkar gave vague statements during interrogation. It is also being probed whether she was linked to any gang.
