We don’t need no (more) education!

“My parents have always been very open about talking to me. School too doles out sex education, but, the initial dependence was on my folks.

Dhruv Bhonagiri,16,standard XI student

“My parents have always been very open about talking to me. School too doles out sex education, but, the initial dependence was on my folks. Now,of course,I speak to my friends a lot more, but the beginnings were made at home.”

Gurpreet Kaur,24,HR professional

“When I am amongst friends, topics like sex do crop up and we tend to have very open discussions about them. Even my male friends are very forthcoming with their experiences, and we often talk about how to deal with problems if they do come about.”

Yash Ponde,16,Student

“Most of the information I received about sex was through my parents, and on a lesser degree from my school. But,the teachers aren’t always very open or comfortable with the topic. The girls in my friends group are an integral part of such frankness.”

Radhika Harpale,18,College student

“Sex education wasn’t a part of my school syllabus. I read the newspapers everyday,so naturally I rely on them heavily to educate me about topics relating to sex too. I keep a track of open forums and expert talk columns on sexual topics as they touch upon so many issues. The internet is a good source too.”

Chetasi Kane,20,Media student

“My most trust-worthy source has been my mother. To this day she remains my best friend in this matter. I think the openness between us only got better as I grew up.”

Abhishek Paradkar,25

Software Engineer

“When I was 10-11 years old,my friends told me about sex. My school,on the other hand, has not talked about this topic at all. Since I am naturally curious,I could glean information about the subject, but I feel that for the general public, such information should be given in schools, preferably in the eighth standard. I also feel that in schools,it should be taught indirectly, but in colleges, straight to the point.
