Four persons,including two children,from a family were killed and two more were injured on Wednesday night when a stone wall collapsed on their hut in a slum area in Yerawada.
The incident took place at around 10.15 pm in Jai Jawan Nagar slum area. Heavy rain had started about three hours before the incident. The 15-year-old compound wall,made of stone blocks,served as a boundary to a crematorium. It collapsed on the hut built with tin sheets.
The Yerawada police have identified the deceased as Ananda Namdev Bhilore (70),his son Sudhakar Ananda Bhilore (40),and Sudhakars kids Akash (12) and Pallavi (8). Sudhakars wife Sangeeta (35) and mother Shantabai (65) suffered minor injuries. The police said Sudhakars parents had come to Pune from their village in Jalgaon for the Ganesh festival.
Ramesh Gangad,station officer with Yerawada Fire Brigade station,said,The incident took place at around 10.20 pm. We got a call at control room at 10.30 pm. The approach route to Jai Jawan Nagar is through narrow bylanes. By the time we reached,the local residents had started taking out the people.
The neighbours of the Bhilore family along with other members of local Ganesh mandal started removing the debris to rescue the trapped persons. Sagar Dheerajsingh,one of the neighbours,said,As we started removing the debris,we started to get electric shocks due to live wires that had snapped.
Fire brigade personnel later asked the MSEDCL to stop the power supply.
PSI Abhijit Ahirrao of Yerawada police station said,We now know that the hut had a partition,which divided it into two rooms. In the room attached to the wall,these four deceased were sleeping. Sudhakars wife and mother were working in the other room. They have escaped with minor injuries. Sudhakar worked in a restaurant in Yerawada and his kids used to go to a nearby school,the neighbours said.
Post mortem report has stated that Sudhakar and Ananda died of multiple injuries,while Akash and Pallavi had severe head injuries. The two injured women have been discharged from the hospital. The local residents said that the last rites will be performed at their village in Jalgaon.
