A 30-year-old undertrial inmate admitted for psychiatric treatment at the infirmary (prison hospital) at Yerawada Central Prison in Pune was found dead on Monday morning in a suspected case of suicide. Jail authorities and the Yerawada police have launched separate probes into the incident.

Yerawada jail officials said the deceased, a resident of Junnar, was booked in a case of attempt to murder filed at Otur police station under Pune Rural jurisdiction. He was sent to the prison under judicial custody on July 16 last year.

On Monday morning at around 7.25 am, the inmate was found dead on a porch next to the infirmary, officials said. He was rushed to the on-duty prison medical officer and was pronounced dead at 7.35 am. Prison officials said the inmate had earlier attempted suicide three days after he was brought to the jail.

In a separate case in September last year, Jitendra Babulal Shinde alias Pappu, 32, a convict in the sensational 2016 Kopardi rape-murder case who was awarded death sentence by a trial court, allegedly died by suicide at Yerawada Central Prison.
