Under a spell

The screeching of doors, the sound of heavy rain and the eerie stillness of pitch dark nights-stories revolving around mystery and the supernatural have always found takers.

The screeching of doors, the sound of heavy rain and the eerie stillness of pitch dark nights – stories revolving around mystery and the supernatural have always found takers. And yet another tale based on the thrills of this genre is director Wilson Louis’ latest movie Mallika, which has hit theatres today. The Pune-based director has a penchant for horror and wants to make his name synonymous with the genre in Bollywood.

Talking about his latest venture,he shares,”Mallika is a tale of a young girl who has a special gift or rather a curse to see the unseen. The film revolves around her experiences.” Louis started his journey as the director of a television programme titled Mirch Masala. As the head of two channels,he has directed more than 21 film-based programmes, five talk shows and a couple of fiction shows. He has also churned out 40 feature films as a visual effects director. Post this,he directed Ho Sakta Hai,a film based on black magic. Starring Victor Banerjee,it delved into the inner fears of people who believe and disbelieve in black magic. This film won multiple awards like Best 3D SFX Sequence at the Seagate Technical Awards 2005 and was also nominated in three categories, including Best SFX film in India at the FICCI Frames 2005. His next projects too have the supernatural element. He says,”I think this genre has a lot of scope for improvement. A lot of movies need to be made on this theme. It is important that the movies have fresh and new ideas as the genre has a very niche audience. Many a time, directors copy ideas from Hollywood flicks.”

His knowledge of digital technology helps him with these films. “I think the present and future of film-making is the digital film medium. It scores over every other medium because of its accessibility,” he feels.

Louis also believes that the USP of horror movies is horror itself. His upcoming projects are Kaalo – the Desert Witch and Shout which are scheduled to release in November and January respectively. Interestingly,Kaalo is said to be India’s first creature-based live-action horror film. “I really want people to remember my work in this particular genre. There is so much that still needs to be talked about and explored,” he says.
