Neighbours spot inebriated girl on staircase, call police
Three young men and two girls were detained by Kothrud police in the early hours of Sunday after one of the girls was spotted on the staircase of the Himali Housing Society in Erandawane during a late-night bash in a flat taken on rent weeks ago by one of the girls. The cops arrived after one of the neighbours disturbed by the ruckus called up control room.
The youths who were released, were reportedly from well-to-do families. Three of them, police sources said, had been arrested earlier for creating a nuisance in a public place on April 17.
According to neighbours,on the night intervening Saturday and Sunday, the youths had a bash at the flat. There was a lot of noise that disturbed them and drew their attention to the flat. They said they spotted one of the girls, inebriated,on the staircase. A young man lifted the girl, who looked semi-conscious,and carried her into the flat.
Saraswati Oza,a resident of the fourth floor on the building, said,My son Parag had gone downstairs when he saw an inebriated young man lifting a heavily drunk and almost unconscious girl lying on the staircase. The man took the girl into the flat which was filled with cigarette smoke. Three-four boys and girls who were drunk were lying in the flat.
Parag called other residents of the flat and one of them called control room. Police reached the flat and detained the youth. One of the girls escaped and hid under the water tank. She was brought down by police.
Neighbours said that one of the girls had taken the flat on rent from the owner,Samata Shah.
The resident of an adjacent flat said,There was a lot of noise at night. But whom do we complain? One girl had rented the flat two-three weeks ago.
Although police did not divulge details, sources said that three of the youth were among the eight who had been arrested on April 17 for creating a nuisance outside Nilambari Apartment, close to Himali Society.
Surprisingly, police refused to divulge information and when pressed, gave ambiguous statements.
Vilas Naranwar, inspector (crime) with Kothrud police station said on Sunday afternoon,We are yet to complete the legal process.
He first said the residents had not given any statement to police but later said their statements had been recorded. A constable at Alankar police chowky first said that five were taken to the police station, while they were in the chowky. They were let off late in the afternoon. We do not have any complaint registered against them, said S Deshmukh,API with Alankar police chowky.
