Between July 2023 and October 2024, the victim was manipulated into making as many as 81 transactions totaling Rs 3.16 crore by cyber criminals who posed as CEO of a mining company on the matrimonial site profile. On the pretext of investment opportunities, family and health emergencies and customs and travel expenses, the fraudsters kept coercing the victim into making large transfers to fraudulent mule accounts.
Investigation by Cyber Crime police station of Pimpri Chinchwad police revealed that of the 81 bank accounts that funds had been siphoned to, 11 were registered at the same address in Delhi-Haryana border area.
In a coordinated action by teams of the cyber crime police station, three suspects identified as Ranjit Munnalal Yadav (27), Sikandar Munna Khan (21) and Bablu Raghuveer Yadav (25), all residents of Mandi area on Delhi-Haryana border, were arrested. The arrests were made four days ago, and the details were shared with the media on Wednesday.
The police have cautioned the public to remain vigilant while using matrimonial websites, as cases of fraud through fake profiles continue getting reported. “Fraudsters often gain trust by projecting false identities and emotionally manipulate victims before seeking money under various pretexts,” an official said. The police have advised users to conduct video calls, verify details through social media and in person background checks, and avoid sharing personal or financial information early in the interaction.
“Beware of those who avoid in-person meetings or rush into commitments,” the official added. Any suspicious activity should be reported to the concerned platform and local police immediately.
