Chennai-based indie electronica outfit The F16s,which performs in Pune today, justifies its name with power-packed gigs.
Just over a year old,the band derives its name from the US Air Force military aircraft, the F16. Chennai-based band The F16s might have named itself owing to a collective fascination for the plane but its music also moves along the same lines, comprising power-packed gigs. While the band has performed in cities such as Goa,Mumbai and Delhi,it is psyched about its debut gig in Pune today.
Though the bands musical genres revolve around alternative rock and electronica, they refuse to tag themselves to a specific one. Our influences include bands such as The Strokes,Arctic Monkeys,Young The Giant,The Black Keys and Jet. Since each of us hails from diverse musical backgrounds,we cant help but sound a little clichéd when we say that we like to make music that sounds fresh, crazy and makes you happy, says Fernandez. Their music alters between genres and mashes them up together. Ultimately,it adds up to what makes us happy and keeps the audiences tuned in to what we do next, he adds.
Fernandez, also the lyricist for the band, says that most of the lyrics are written in the format of a story. With nine original tracks composed so far,the band is working on three more. The song titled Avalanche deals with running away from problems that are unavoidable, and how they need to be faced and conquered. Another song titled Kings Dream is an ode to Martin Luther King in a rock n roll style and his struggle against racism. Nuke is about preparation for war and answering the call of the country.
Our songs are stories that we tell through our music. While some of them are happy, others are mellow. We tell stories that evoke a variety of emotions, says Fernandez. The band will also be releasing an EP (extended play) next month with six songs in it.
The F16s will perform at High Spirits,Koregaon Park,on Friday,8:30 pm.
