Ek Cup Chya has one of the most progressive acts, the Right to Information, functioning as a democratic tool in a common man’s life

The act may not solve a problem completely however stipulating information through it does thrust the democratic system towards progress and more than ever when a common man uses the tool asserts Sunil Sukhtankar. It comes as no surprise then, when Kishore Kadam who is playing a bus conductor uses it to interpret his overstated electricity bill in Sukhtankar and Sumitra Bhave’s latest directorial venture Ek Cup Chya. The duo’s 10 th film through the conception of Right To Information tells a story of a bus conductor and his family in Konkan who use it to resolve the predicament.

Almost a week post its release and the film has been getting an overpowering response besides being screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa and Mumbai International Film Festival. Taking the execution of the act at the grass root level it focuses on the common man who is led by an activist, played by Devika Daftardar to exercise the power. Ashwini Giri plays the role of the conductor’s wife. “Many of them liked the soft humorous treatment which is deliberately given to the film to underline the happiness in their life and that also is the sole strength for them to fight injustice. The two most important things are- the honour of such common people to be maintained in the democratic system and to emphasise that there is a consistent ignorance towards such rights which can can be brought to use. The conductor is deliberately chosen as a protagonist since people like him are the ones who feel that it is out of reach and difficult however it can be exceedingly accessible,” adds Sukhtankar who also plays the role of the bus driver in the film.

Produced by the KS Wani Memorial Trust and the Schizophrenia Awareness Association (SAA),it has also conjoined with the duo for their earlier film Devrai based on schizophrenia. Major part of the film was shot in Konkan including towns like Kankavli and Vengurla. “Sumitra Bhave conducted an extensive research by meeting activists, people who have used it and those who organised jana andolans to eventually project the story that restores the sovereignty of a simple person. It indeed is a weapon and should be actively used however as far as me accessing it goes, just like my protagonist I too have been afraid of bureaucracy but after seeing my own film,it has been an inspiration for me,” he laughs.
