Sharmila Tagore recalled incidents from her grandkids' childhoods where she learnt some parenting lessons from son Saif Ali Khan.

Soha Ali Khan recently invited her mother Sharmila Tagore and her niece Sara Ali Khan on her YouTube channel and amongst many subjects, the trio also discussed parenting. Sharmila has brought up three children – Soha, Saba and Saif Ali Khan. Soha is the mother of an 8-year-old daughter Inaaya. And while Sara is not a parent, she grew up in a non-traditional household as her parents – Saif and Amrita Singh – divorced when she was 9, and she largely grew up with her mother in those impressionable years.

‘Saif Ali Khan is an excellent parent’

Sharmila, while speaking on the subject, said that she had learnt a lot from her kids as she saw them becoming parents and said that unlike her, who relied on older adults in the family for raising children, the newer generation was more dependent on books, and their friends. Speaking about Saif, she recalled that when Sara was younger, she would go to late night movie premieres with her parents, but would also finish her homework after coming back.

“Saif has been an excellent parent. I have seen him with you (Sara). Like if they had to go to a premiere in the middle of the night, she went with them but we can see it hasn’t harmed her, and she would come back and do her homework,” Sharmila shared.

She recalled another incident from Ibrahim Ali Khan’s childhood where Saif taught her that being perfect wasn’t the most important thing. “With Ibrahim, I remember… I think it was Pataudi and they were doing the Christmas tree and I was trying to be perfect and trying to put it in the right way. And Ibrahim was putting it all over the place. So Saif said, ‘Do you mind? It has to be participative’. I also learnt that you don’t have to be perfect but allow the children to grow at their own pace. And he has been really really wonderful,” she said. Sharmila added that with his young children, Taimur and Jeh, he was “very real” when an intruder entered their house in the middle of the night and Saif got severely injured in a scuffle.

Sara Ali Khan is ‘unfiltered’ like her mom Amrita Singh

Sara was also asked about what she learnt from both her parents and she laughed and said, “On a bad day, you don’t want to ask Abba or Amma because they are like, ‘You are like your father’ or ‘You are like your mother’. And I am like, ‘Guys, this is bound to happen, you studied DNA right? Yes, I am like my mom and yes, I am like my father’.”

Talking about what she has learnt from her father, Sara said that she also has “eclectic likes” like her father. And speaking about her mother Amrita, she said that she learnt to be “unfiltered” from her. “Staying real in a world where it’s difficult to be that way. People are like, ‘Oh you are so bindaas, you are so unfiltered. How are you that way?’ And I think that’s because of mom. I think she is not at all watching her Ps and Qs. I mean she is not a rude person but she is real. In a world where people go out of their way to manicure you, I think we are manicured only on our hands,” she said with a laugh.
