The Pune Pencil Club,is the new shade in the city’s art world

Eleven-year-old Vineet Venkat tries to put the tones and curves of the fountain at the Pune University campus on paper. At some distance, his mother,Soumya, uses her pencil to add the sharp lines of the dried leaves that are spread around. For anyone looking to rekindle their interest of sketching or for those who always wanted to do it but never really took it up ,this is the place to be. Called the Pune Pencil Club, members are all tilted towards capturing the world in myriad shades of grey. Conversations follow,as each of them start discussing their work. Drawing inspiration from the Bangalore-based Pencil Jammers Club, the PPC,which started on March 6,is the initiative of e-learning entrepreneur,Hasit Seth, whose dedication for the wooden wonder goes beyond a hobby.

Without taking his eye off his canvas,Seth says,“Sketching has always interested me,and I felt that sketching as a group could be really great, which is how I came up with the concept of the club. The club is open to all. We will have events every week, where Saturdays would ideally have an indoor sketching session and Sundays would be spent outdoors. There is no age limit and everyone is free to come and be a part of it.”

The Club works with no set format – the only requirement is a pencil and the inclination to draw. Spreading word through Facebook, the Pune Pencil Club currently sports 38 members. Sketches, links and pictures adorn the community wall and the event for the coming weeks is put up on the wall for every member to know.

“After a long time I took a pencil in my hand,” says Smita Phadke visibly content. Phadke,an alumni of Abhinav Kala Mandir took to Film Editing and so finds it hard to pursue her first love. “I remember getting reprimanded at school for sketching during a Maths class,” she says,” But now I hardly find time to sketch and draw which is why this Club is the perfect thing for me. It feels great to be able to get back to this feeling.” The group had their first indoor meeting at Bavdan where they sketched everything right from a twisted wire to a portrait of a little girl.
