What is life without music? It is like life without colour,like winter without sunshine. Every walk of life has within it some form of the most blessed of art forms,from the horn of our vehicle to the ringtone of our phone. The year 2010 saw a myriad of sound gracing the city,with world renowned artistes from both India and abroad performing. Be it a DJ,with the city dancing to his tunes,or a rock band,with the audience headbanging in unison,the city has had its fair share of concerts. Here’s a roundup of the best of the best performances in the city so far.
Baajaa Gaajaa: (February 5-10)
The third edition of the music festival,that comprised of not only live music performances,seminars and film screenings but also of expos,where budding musicians,record companies and professional music instrument suppliers set up stalls to woo the audiences and serious music aficionados all alike. Among the artistes who performed were Pandit Shivkumar Sharma,Indian Ocean and Aneesh Pradhan.
The fun gets infected (July 29)
What was to to be one of the biggest gigs of the year turned out to be the disaster of the year as Israeli band Infected Mushroom’s performance at 1 Lounge was busted by cops. Many fans were left disappointed,not least because the passes for the event had come at prices that were quite steep.
Indian Ocean (August 3)
This was the time when the music scene in the city was to really pick up. The infected mushroom gig a few days ago turned out to be a huge let-down,so it was up to this Delhi band to really take up the mantle. A horde of music-starved souls,most of them in their 20s,landed up at Hard Rock Cafe for the gig,and this concert was what effectively set the ball rolling for a flood of gigs in the city.
The Hip crowd
Mcing,DJing,breaking and graffiti writing and beatboxing. These are the four pillars of Hip-hop. The past year saw two of the biggest emerging artistes in the world perform in the city,with Sean Kingston and Flo Rida rocking the city with their popular numbers.
Pune Festival (September 11-22)
The 22nd edition of the Pune festival was a kaleidoscope of cultural art. Music too featured in great abundance,with artistes like Kishori Amonkar and Pandit Shivkumar Sharma enthralling the city with stellar displays.
Sawai Gandharva (December 9-12)
To perform in the Sawai Gandharva festival is an honour in itself. And when the 58th edition of the festival was held,classical music lovers across the city were privy to performances by Bhaskar Nath,Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma,Pandit Jasraj,Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt,Rajan and Sajan Mishra and Upendra Bhat over the four-day festival.
NH7 (December 10-12)
Imagine an explosion of music artistes of every possible genre performing togther at a common stage. The NH7 festival made it possible,with bands like Pentagram,The Raghu Dixit Project,Split,DJ Klute and Noiseware perform across various venues in Koregaon Park. In all,over 50 artistes performed at the fest.
GIR (December 17)
The Great Indian Rock festival summons some of the greatest metal bands in the world to perform in India. This year,Scandinavian metal giants Meshuggah and Enslaved headlined the gig,with complementary performances by English band TesseracT and city-based Noiseware. This festival was a chance for the headbanging,metal-loving citizens to scream their hearts out.
DJs
Techno and trance,lots of lasers,lights and dance. The city saw a plethora of DJs entertain crowds,with bars,nightclubs and discotheques revelling in the experience. Right from a simple get up,where a DJ played some tunes to which the masses danced,to competitions,the city had no excuse to stop grooving! The various DJs who performed in the city included the likes of Skazi,Neil Quigley and John 00 Fleming,as well as Indian artistes like Nikhil Chinapa and Spike Me Mike.
