Local players Vasanti Shinde and Sahil Deshmukh defied their tender ages to win titles at the Rachana Lifestyle Trophy-Om Dalvi Memorial National Ranking junior tennis tournament. The tournament was organised by the PYC Hindu Gymkhana,and concluded at the clubs tennis courts here on Saturday.
Left hander Vasanti Shinde,an eighth standard student of the VikhePatil Memorial school,lifted a memorable double crown winning the Girls Under 16 and Under 18 event. She won the Under-16 title by upsetting another Puneite,top seed Devanshi Bhimjiyani 2-6,7-5,6-4 in a match lasting 2 and a half hours.
In the Under-18 event,Shinde seeded eighth,overcame Bhimjiyani yet again by a scoreline of 6-3,6-4 to clinch her second title of the day.
Thirteen-year old Deshmukh won his first ever career Under 18 titleby defeating Nishant Ribello of Andhra Pradesh 6-3,6-2 in the final. Deshmukh is a student of the Lexicon School.
Aditya Kaustubhan failed to give the Puneites a clean sweep of the tournament,suffering a defeat at the hands of fifth seed Mahesh Bhatija of Karnatake,who stopped the Pune lad’s winning run in the finals of the under 16 event,winning 6-3,6-2 to lift the title.
