Telecom towers without nod draw flak from PCB members

The installation of towers by the telecom operators within the residential areas under the Pune Cantonment Board has drawn the ire of its elected members.

The installation of towers by the telecom operators within the residential areas under the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has drawn the ire of its elected members. PCB elected members have taken a strong exception to these towers being installed in the residential areas saying that this is misuse of the building by-laws that does not permit any commercial activity in the residential areas. PCB member,Manzoor Nazir Shiekh, said the towers have been erected by the telecom companies without seeking permission from the cantonment board.

“Other cantonment members also raised the issue with the PCB protesting the erection of these towers without the permission from the cantonment board,” said,Shiekh. The members have brought the matter to the notice of PCB Chief Executive Officer (CEO),Rachel Koshey, who has assured the cantonment board will look into the matter.

“These towers have been erected without the permission of the board and the PCB does not benefit. The cantonment board doesn’t charge anything from the telecommunication companies for the erection of these towers. We are seeking that these towers should be installed only after due permission and the cantonment board should also be able to earn the revenue from it,” said,Shiekh.

He added that the some of the residents have complained that the erection of these towers was posing a grave threat in residential areas as they may even fall and cause damages to the nearby areas.

PCB members said that the matter will also be raised in the meeting of the cantonment board that is slated later this month. Although, the PCB has not decided on the dates, the meeting is expected to be held later this week, said a PCB official, adding that the unathorised installation of the towers can be discussed and even can be part of the main agenda.
