Many areas in the city experienced sudden rainfall for a short duration on the Diwali afternoon on Friday, leading to a slight drop in temperature. Though some of the low-lying areas saw waterlogging for not more than half-an-hour,no traffic jams or uprooting of trees were reported.
The duty officer at Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune said the city received 13.2 mm rainfall between 1 pm and 2.30 pm.
P C S Rao,the director of the weather centre at Pune IMD,said,”We forecast this rainfall a few days ago. The main reason behind the showers is the rain-bearing activity in Bay of Bengal five to six days ago. This has now moved towards the land, leading to rains in various parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The same phenomenon is causing scattered rains across Maharashtra.”
“The rain-bearing phenomenon is expected to move further into Arabian Sea,” he added.
The duty officer also said a depression has developed 950 km East-Southeast of Chennai and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic activity. Its movement is in the West-Northwest direction.
In Pune, areas such at Balgandharva Chowk, parts of Shatri Road and a few places in Sahakarnagar experienced water-logging for half-and-hour.
An operator at the traffic control room said no complaints of traffic snarls were reported. Similarly,no reports of falling trees were received at the fire brigade.
Diwali celebrations, however, continued uninterrupted. Pravin Renuse,a resident of Pashan, said,”It rained in the afternoon but did not affect the festive mood for Laxmi Poojan.”
