Sudha Murty of Infosys to be conferred with Lokmanya Tilak National Award

The award, presented by Lokmanya Tilak Smarak Trust, recognises Murty's contribution in rural development, literature and social work.

Sudha MurthySudha Murty, co-founder of Infosys Foundation, has significantly contributed to various social sectors.

After running into a political controversy last year when the prestigious award was conferred upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Lokmanya Tilak National Award this year has been announced for social activist, writer and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty.

Last year, the award stirred up a controversy when it was given to PM Modi by the trust which has Congress leaders as trustees. The award, presented by Lokmanya Tilak Smarak Trust, recognises Murty’s contribution in rural development, literature and social work.

Trustees of Tilak Smarak Trust selected Murty unanimously, highlighting that her efforts aligned with Lokmanya Tilak’s principles of ‘swadeshi’ and human development.

Rohit Tilak, one of the trustees, announced the award on Saturday. The ceremony will be held on August 1, the 104th death anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak, at Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi.

Sharad Pawar, president of the Nationalist Congress Party (S-P), Congress MP Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaj and former Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala will be present on the occasion.

This year marks the 42nd presentation of Lokmanya Tilak National Award, which includes a memento and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

Since 1983, the Lokmanya Tilak National Award has been conferred on individuals for their selfless services to the nation. Socialist SM Joshi was the first recipient of this award. Many renowned personalities across several fields have been honoured with this award which includes PM Modi, former PMs Indira Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh, scientist G Madhavan Nair, industrialists Baba Kalyani, Rahul Bajaj, Cyrus Poonawala, social workers Vikas and Prakash Amte who received the award last year.

Sudha Murty, co-founder of Infosys Foundation, has significantly contributed to various social sectors. She has been instrumental in rural development, literature, and social work.

Murty was born on August 19, 1950, in Shigaon, Karnataka. She is married to NR Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys. Sudha holds a BE in Electrical Engineering, a gold medalist and a PG in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Science. She began her career as an engineer, becoming the first woman to work for Tata Motors.

Her notable social initiatives include establishing libraries in Karnataka schools, creating the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University, and constructing around 10,000 toilets in rural Karnataka.
