19-year-old girl student kills herself over harassment by canteen staffer of Pune college

She succumbed to the burns on Monday while being treated at a hospital in Pune.

An FIR was registered at the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station on Tuesday on a complaint lodged by Renuka’s father Balaji.

“The initial probe suggests that the canteen staffer named Satish Jadhav was making unwanted advances towards the deceased and repeatedly sending her text messages. The girl’s father has also alleged that a fellow girl student was harassing Renuka. The two have been booked for abetment of suicide. Jadhav has also been booked for molestation. We have launched a search for Jadhav. He is on the run,” said Inspector Dashrath Patil, the police station in-charge.

Renuka’s father has said in the FIR that she was terrified because of Jadhav’s harassment and that the fellow girl student had continued to harass her in spite of repeated requests not to.

Inspector Patil added that their initial investigation suggested that Renuka had not complained to any college or hostel authorities about the alleged harassment. Her phone has been sent for a cyber forensics examination, officials said.
