In a bid to bring the higher education system in the state on par with global level changes, the state government has constituted three committees to review present Acts, propose the bifurcation of Pune,Nagpur and Mumbai universities, and propose relevant changes for quality improvement in higher education.

While the committee under the chairmanship of former UGC chairman Arun Nigvekar will review the Acts, the committee headed by former vice-chancellor of University of Pune Ram Takavale will propose changes for bifurcation of universities.

The third committee,to be chaired by former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar, will propose a revamp in the higher education system to improve quality of education. The state government has come up with general resolutions (GR) in this regard four days back.

The preface of GRs state quality of higher education has been declining, when globally a lot of changes have been taking place.

“In recent meetings of joint board of vice-chancellors,the Chancellor of state universities has stressed that the state government should make relevant changes in higher education system to empower students to sustain in the process of globalisation of education… It is necessary to make higher education relevant,futuristic,research-oriented,and competitive,” says the GR.

Nigvekar welcomed the move saying the government should be praised for bringing in the comprehensive approach. “It is also an interesting challenge for us as academicians to prepare a framework to meet challenges of the future.” “Technology has become an integral part of education. Since a lot of changes have been taking place in technology, theses have to be taken into consideration while preparing the new framework,” said Nigvekar.

“I think the three panels are in a way interconnected, through which a cohesive picture of the new framework will emerge,” he said.
