The educational hub that the city is known for has an extremely valuable contribution from this particular society. And as it enters its 150th year on November 19 the Maharashtra Education Society (MES),one of the oldest education societies in the city stands testimony as a contributor to the mammoth educational advancements that the city has witnessed.

Founded in the year 1860 by the freedom fighters Vasudev Balwant Phadke,Vaman Prabhakar and Laxman Narhar Indapurkarit MES was earlier known as Poona Native Institution. They now have more than 40 educational institutes in the state with its Aabasaheb Garware College and Garware College of Commerce being among their flagship institutes in the city.

Speaking about the upcoming events for the 150-year celebrations Ravindra Vanjarwadkar,Chairman MES says,“We will be felicitating around 15 institutions that have completed 100 years in education including Maharshi Karve Shikshan Sanstha,Deccan College and Bhartiya Itihaas Sanshodak Mandal. We also plan to hold conferences with more than 150 experts speaking on challenges before education. There will also be cultural programs held and a community college inaugurated soon. It is an overwhelming feeling to achieve such a great feat for all its students and faculty and a nostalgic moment for the alumni who revisit their school and colleges, send us letters and donations to the society.”

With a lot of initiatives,in 1989 MES also started the Renuka Swaroop Institute of Career Courses, where women from different strata are trained right from hobby classes to professional courses. Under the banner of Shikshan Prabodhini, the organisation has started training courses for teachers from the pre-primary to the higher secondary sections.

“It is a proud feeling to be associated with a college that has such a illustrious history. It has been a very good experience to be in a college that has an outstanding faculty, and trains us much beyond the theories in the classrooms,” says Sudheera Gulve,B BA student of Garware College of Commerce.
