Some of India’s top shooters,including ISSF world Champions Gagan Narang and Tejaswini Sawant,were present at the inauguration of the School State Shooting Championships for boys and girls at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi recently.

In his inaugural address,Sanjay Sabnis,assistant director,Balewadi sports complex,said Narendra Sopal,Maharashtra’s director of sports and youth services,had a key role in helping Maharashtra bag first place in the recently held National School Games. Narang said other states in India should look to emulate Maharashtra in promoting sport. Some of the shooters who bagged gold on the opening day were Mumbai’s Aliana Paul (girls’ open sight air rifle),Nasik’s Pranav Patil (boys’ open sight air rifle) and Harsha Ukhre (girls’ air pistol).

Volkswagen organises fitness camp in Lonavala

Drivers competing in the upcoming 2011 season of the Volkswagen Polo Cup (India) recently underwent a three-day fitness camp at Lonavala. The camp was conducted by trainers from the ABS Fitness and Wellness Club,including experts in nutrition management,kickboxing,aerobics and power yoga. Among the sessions introduced in this year’s camp were rock climbing,archery and recovery yoga. “The techniques and tips taught last year really helped me perform at my peak. This year,Volkswagen increased the level of fitness training,which was really beneficial and will help me prepare for the season ahead,” said driver Vishnu Prasad. The Polo Cup season begins with round one at Coimbatore from June 17 to 19.

PDFA league: Rangehills defeat Dynamites

MOHAN DAS scored twice in the space of seven minutes to propel Rangehills YB to a 4-0 win over Dynamites in the first division of the PDFA-Peninsula Land football league here on Wednesday.
