On the day evil was destroyed at the hands of good, history was created a history, which was passed from one generation to another giving messages of peace, hope and teaching an art of distinguishing between evil and good. Ramayana,is not only one of the longest written epics, but also a mirror that gives us our true image. Dusshera, being an apt occasion for some self realisation,we asked some known faces in the city for some introspection and got some candid answers about their resemblance to Rama or Ravana.

An introspection reveals that qualities like being helpful to others, staying calm even in odd circumstances and believing in the supreme power makes me more like Rama. I believe we are mere tools in the hands of the Almighty therefore we should not worry as the end result is pre-planned. I also have a few qualities of Ravana, who had some good virtues as well. I never feel satisfied with whatever I do for people, that urge to do more keeps me going but also denies satisfaction to me so that makes me more like Ravana, who was not at peace till he achieved what he wanted to and yet urged for more.

Both the mythological characters teach us something,so instead of looking for good and bad in us,we should learn from the two characters of the Ramayana. Shri Rama’s life teaches us that true spirituality is not flight it is a heroic fight against the lower self of passion and pride,of lust and hatred and greed. Life is a battlefield and everyone is called upon to stand up as a hero,a soldier of the spirit. Ravana’s life teaches us that ultimate victory belongs not to physical might, cruelty and injustice but to humility, purity and compassion.

The beauty is not in criticising, but imbibing the good and destroying the evil. When I introspect,I feel that I enjoy giving and the joy of giving makes me quite like Lord Rama. Had it not been the pleasure I derive in giving,I would not have been able to do anything for the society or even for myself. However,I feel my strong determination is close to Ravana’s nature. Whether right or wrong, success or failure,Ravana never hesitated in making an attempt to achieve what he wanted. I also follow my heart and give my best to achieve what goal I set for myself. While I do this the Rama in me checks that I don’t go wrong.

The most important thing that I can associate myself with Lord Ram is the fact that I do not lie. In fact it is one of the things I detest a lot. So that is one characteristic that I can say for sure that I do have. A thing that I wish to change about myself is the fact that I am too grounded in life. I believe while humility is important sometimes not everyone can understand the meaning of the same and people might end up taking undue advantage of a person. So just to deal with such people I definitely think I need to be more firm and determined to ensure that people should know that being proud and conceited doesnt always take them places.
