The PMC has written to the state government to speed up the Pune Metro project. The state government had days ago passed a resolution to build Rs 2,593-crore mass transit project and model it on the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The model looks at contribution from the centre,state and the local body.
PMC commissioner Mahesh Pathak has requested state chief secretary to expedite the project by facilitating formation of special purpose vehicle (SPV) and appointing a managing director for the same. The civic body has requested the state to appoint a high-powered committee headed by the chief secretary to ensure smooth implementation of the project. The PMC has stated that SPV,to be called the Pune Metro Rail Corporation should be implemented without any delay.
As planned the state wants to complete the construction of the metro in the next three years and make it operational in another two.
The state cabinet has approved the elevated metro route from Vanaz to Ramwadi. The route will be extended to Chandannagar and a separate line will go to Pune airport. The metro will have its main depot at Kothrud.
The PMC has been appointed the executive body to take decisions regarding the project until the SPV is formed. The project requires 18.44 hectares for depot and metro stations.
