Special Forces missions, counter-drone tactics, small-unit ops to feature in India-Uzbekistan joint military exercise
Joint Exercise Dustlik is an annual training event conducted alternatively in India and Uzbekistan. Last edition was conducted in Termez District, Uzbekistan in April 2024.
The Indian contingent of 60 personnel is being represented by a Battalion of Jat Regiment and IAF's Garud Special Forces. SPECIAL FORCES missions, anti-drone tactics and small team insertion and extraction (STIE) operations will be some of the key features of the sixth edition of the India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise Dustlik that commenced on Wednesday at Foreign Training Node in Pune. The exercise is centred around sub-conventional operations in semi-urban settings responding to a terrorist action involving the capture of a defined territory.
The Indian contingent of 60 personnel is being represented by a Battalion of Jat Regiment and IAF’s Garud Special Forces. Officials said that as part of the exercise, a simulated scenario of a semi urban area that is captured by terrorist operatives will be created. The response will include the establishment of a Joint Operations Centre at the battalion level, execution of counterterrorism missions such as population control measures, raids, search-and-destroy operations, and the employment of firepower, including air assets, to neutralise terrorists.
“During the exercise, Special forces from the Army and the Air Force will secure a helipad for use as a mounting base for further operations. The exercise will cover the deployment of drones, counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems measures, and logistics support by the Air Force to sustain forces in hostile areas. Additionally, helicopters will be utilised for reconnaissance and observation, special heliborne operations (SHBO), small team insertion and extraction (STIE) and other associated missions.” read a press statement from the Indian Army.
“Exercise will facilitate developing interoperability, bonhomie and camaraderie between the two armies. The Joint Exercise will also enhance defence cooperation, further augmenting bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.” the release said.
Brigadier S Taluja, Commander of the 330 Infantry Brigade said in his address, “Our relationship is deeply rooted in history, tracing back to the ancient days that connected our lands and facilitated a rich exchange of culture, ideas, and trade for centuries. Today, we carry forward that legacy of connection and mutual respect into a modern era of strategic partnership and growing cooperation. This joint military exercise is a powerful manifestation of our shared commitment to enhancing regional security, fostering interoperability between our armed forces, and strengthening the bonds of friendship between our personnel.”
Uzbekistan Contingent Commander Colonel Jabarov Thoir Ergashovich said, “This exercise is a great opportunity for us to work together on important tasks related to counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban areas. We will use different types of armed forces and share best practices in this field. Since each region has its own characteristics, this exercise will help us improve coordination, develop common approaches to planning, and carry out operations more effectively.”
