Southern Command Gold Cup race today

A grade III race,it is traditionally conducted on the second Sunday of September each year.

The Southern Command Gold Cup Race 2013 will be conducted at Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC),Race Course today. A grade III race,it is traditionally conducted on the second Sunday of September each year.

As per tradition,Lt Gen Ashok Singh,General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Command will give away the Cup and other prizes to winners. The race will also be attended by a number of officers and their families.

The event will begin at 2.30 pm with the Field Marshal Manekshaw Memorial Trophy race. The Southern Command Gold Cup Race will begin at 4 pm. “The race will be preceded by scintillating and daring displays by the brave soldiers of the Indian Army. There are several events – a fly past by helicopters of the Army Aviation,a sky diving display,a para-motor display and a tent pegging display by various teams of the Army. The race promises to be a once in a life time experience for all who attend the event,” said a press release issued by the Press Information Bureau,Defence Wing.

According to the release,this race was first held on September 4,1948 as the ‘Southern Command Cup’ race. The race became a listed race in 1986 and was accorded the graded status in 1999.
